Have you wondered why we keep talking about personal goals and, more recently, personal growth in a business blog? It’s because YOU are the most important variable in your business equation. You have everything to do with the success of your business and the purpose that you want to accomplish in life.
One of the most important ways to make sure your personal and professional growth are headed in the right direction is to understand your core values.
Your values define who you are as person and direct who you will be in the future. After all, you have reasons why you do certain things – and they are very much related and interconnected to your values.
Put simply: You are what you value.
By identifying your values, you will find out whether you are on the right track. If you work in opposition to your core values, then you are at odds with yourself. This sets you up for unnecessary tension, stress, and strain – both in business and life.
And yet, few people think very much at all about their values. So here are three important questions that will help you identify what they are in your life.
- What are the most important things in my life? They may be your family, your business, your wealth, etc… Then, once you’ve asked yourself that, ask a deeper, more important question: What do I gain from these? Perhaps it’s companionship, loyalty, financial security, sense of freedom. These gains, the direct product of what you prize, are what you value in life.
- What am I good at? These are your strengths. Then ask why you feel you do well in these areas. Because people tend to unconsciously serve their strengths, this will provide more important insight into what you value.
- What do I spend my time and money on? If you’re stuck, this question will help you begin to identify what’s most important to you. Areas where you spend more time and money are the most valuable to you – otherwise, you wouldn’t spend your resources there.
Our values are our ultimate guide in our daily decisions. We often feel uncomfortable whenever we are not true to our values. But when we identify them, we can consciously serve and honor them…and that translates to a better, more successful, and fulfilled life.
