"Mind over matter!"
Cliché, right? But what that overused line is trying to tell us is that the mind is critical if we want to set things in motion. This is especially true in business.
People with lackluster, negative, or disorganized thoughts tend to struggle in all areas of life. On the contrary, if you think positively and you believe in your abilities, you are most likely to make it.
No, this isn't about applying "secret" powers to make success magically appear. Instead, it’s about reengineering your thinking so that you can reengineer the actions you take…and therefore the results you get.
So what’s the first step?
Adopt a BE-DO-HAVE mindset vs. a HAVE-DO-BE approach.
Most of us do it the wrong way. We think of what we have and do things within our limitations. As a result, we allow ourselves to become what our means can only support. And that's too conservative, isn't it?
Let me explain this concept. Most people believe if they "have" a thing (e.g., more time, more money, more business), then they can finally "do" a thing (write a book, take up a hobby, go on vacation, buy a home, expand their business), which will allow them to "be" a thing (happy, peaceful, successful, etc.). In actuality, they are reversing the Be-Do-Have paradigm. In the universe as it really is (as opposed to how you think it is), "havingness" does not produce "beingness," but the other way around.
First you need to "be" the thing called "happy" (or "knowing" or "successful"), then you will start "doing" things from this place of being – and soon you discover that what you are doing winds up bringing you the things you've always wanted to "have."
The way to set this creative process (and that's what this is ... the process of creation) into motion is to look at what it is you want to "have," ask yourself what you think you would "be" if you "had" that, then go right straight to being it.
In this way you work with, rather than against, the creative power of the universe.
Again, this is how you will sound using the less effective method: "When I (have) more customers, I will (do) more to expand my business, and I will (be) a successful business owner!"
Using the be-do-have formula, the statement will go like this: "I will be a successful business owner, which will allow me to expand my business vision, which will bring me more customers!" Isn’t it a lot better to be aggressive and forward-looking?
The last statement shows you the direct connection of all three: who you must be in order to know what you need to do in order to have what you want.
So how can you begin to change your thinking?
First, look at your strengths, skills, and talents. Finding your strong areas will help you put yourself in a position yourself where you do your very best. Know that playing to your strengths is one of the fastest, most powerful ways to be successful.
Next, look at your weaknesses. Find out where you feel you’d like to improve. Ask yourself: "Who do I need to be in order to turn weaknesses into strengths?" Sometimes you’ll find that you will be more successful if, instead of trying to change yourself fundamentally, you bring on talented team members to cover your "weak" areas. Part of wisdom is deciding which areas you can and should improve, and which you cannot and should not.
Once you shift your mindset to become the kind of person who does what it takes to get what really want to have, you will be more successful in all areas of your life!
This sort of shift in your thinking can be difficult without the aid of an experienced coach. A good coach can help you identify your strengths and areas of improvement.
