Short-Term Goals for Personal Growth

Many business owners pay less attention than they should to their personal growth. They believe they are too busy with business to appreciate the impact your personal improvement can have on your success.

But as we’ve explored in previous posts, all the areas of your life are interrelated. When you are more successful personally, you tend to be more successful professionally.

However, in both business and personal development, it’s important to set both a long-term, large-scale vision, as well as smaller, more incremental goals to keep you going.

Here are some important ways to break bigger goals down into smaller tasks and actions…

  1. Set your targets. Especially in the more nuanced areas of personal growth, it can be difficult to set “objective” targets. It’s easy to measure an increase in sales or a decrease in expenses…but how do you “measure” increased optimism or decreased anxiety, for example? The answer is to let your short-term goals be action-oriented: completing a 2-hour online course or getting 10 of your friends to follow your business blog. With your targets in place, you will be able to make discernable progress that keeps you motivated and headed for success.
  2. Take pleasure in small wins. Did you accomplish one of your short-term goals? If yes, reward yourself with something simple that will inspire you to keep going in the same direction.
  3. Evaluate periodically. Schedule some time periodically to evaluate whether or not your short-term goals are moving you toward your long-term objectives. Be patient – personal improvement can take a little time – but if you feel as though the goals aren’t working, re-structure them. Mid-stream “course corrections” are just as important to making real progress as those incremental victories.
